Slots and Scenarios

A slot is a dynamic placeholder that either waits for content (a passive slot) or calls out to a targeter to fill the slot with content (an active slot). Slots and scenarios work in tandem with each other to deliver and manage dynamic items on a Web page.

Historically, slot machines were mechanical devices with reels that spun when activated by a lever or button. The reels would stop to rearrange symbols and, depending on the arrangement, the player earned credits based on the paytable. Today’s slot machines are electronic and use a random number generator to determine the odds of a winning combination.

Many players enjoy playing slots because of their simplicity and low learning curve. The rules of each game vary, but most include a standard set of winning combinations, such as identical symbols lined up along a predetermined line. Players may also be able to select the coin value that will apply to their spins, which affects the size of their wins and payout multipliers.

While it may be difficult for some players to accept, there is no such thing as a ‘due’ payout on a slot machine. The outcome of each spin is determined by the random number generator inside the machine and a thousand mathematical calculations take place every second. As such, it is impossible to predict what will occur on a given spin and chasing a certain combination of symbols will only result in losing money.
